The importance and advantages of learning a foreign language are continuing to increase day by day. Over the years the inflow of immigrants into the US has ended up causing a demand for Spanish translators and interpreters, not to mention the dire need for other languages as well.
Americans used to have some strange and pseudo-scientific views concerning studying foreign languages. There was talk of a second language taking up the memory capacity and just as incorrect was the notion that a second language was only for those were mentally gifted.

Actually, studies have shown that learning a second language at an early age has a positive effect on academic growth and definitely enriches and enhances a child's mental development. The advantages are powerful. Second language learning imparts cultural stimulation and assists the child to understand and appreciate people from other countries and become increasingly aware of other cultures and traditions. Basically, when children are adequately exposed to two languages at an early age, they are more flexible and creative.
Scientifically, children in foreign language programs have tended to demonstrate greater cognitive development, creativity, and divergent thinking than monolingual children. In other words, those children who are competent in more than one language outscore those who are speakers of only one language in verbal and nonverbal tests.
Business wise, the world is becoming a smaller place with so much common global interests that learning a second language has become almost a necessity. With so many different languages globally, knowing a second language can give a person an edge in a multilingual world. This advantage could be used almost anywhere which includes the work area, a foreign province or a country, and even in schools.
Today there are many jobs and occupations that either require or would benefit from a foreign language. In other words, it could help anyone from a taxi-driver to a grocery clerk. Although there are many skills around that one could master, a second language is a skill or a trait that that most people could benefit from mastering. As a language without utilization just does not work, and will amount to a huge waste of time. Studies have shown that acquiring a foreign or second language actually increases mental acuity. So what is the bottom line - Get out there and learn a foreign language
